The American poet Robert Frost wrote
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
After struggling in the snow by myself for about an hour during stage 3 of TdeL, I saw my reward: the light of Rosstopher's lamp brightening the forest in front of me coming into our 8th control. All I needed to do was stay with him, find my controls, and I'd have another stage victory in the bag.
After punching #9 just behind my rival, I took a quick look at the long leg to #10 and decided to go around on a trail while Rosstopher took the direct route. As soon as I hit the trail that runs along the horse paddock, I realized I'd made a mistake: there were no tracks, and the snow was deep. One fatal route choice mistake, 2.5 minutes lost, and defeat snatched deftly from the jaws of victory.
Half the Tour still to go. Flogsta tonight. Bring it on.
